Art Journaling Workshop Series

Art journaling is unparalleled in its capacity for expression, because there are no rules. The content is yours and can be as public or as private as you like. That freedom of expression makes the art journal a true garden for creativity, a place to plant emotional pain and joys that need some contemplation, a zeitgeist time-capsule of your life and experiences, a factory for developing thoughts and theories that might be expanded for larger or continued works, and a petri dish for cultivating new intrepid ways of thinking.

MORE ON ART JOURNALING..

UNDERSTANDING HOW & WHY

Part of what makes journaling so special is that it's an acquired hobby (or habit if you are me). It's not for everyone, which makes it that much more unique. It's not for the extremely impatient or ultra hedonist who shies from introspection. It can be hard work and involves pushing yourself. But if you have an interest and a little bit of dedication, then a whole world of possibility is waiting. Through our workshop, we explore how useful and versatile this art form is.
  • Helping you find your purpose and discover what you'd like to accomplish with your books.
  • Finding what inspires you and helping you to capitalize on your strengths as an artist and thinker

THINKING LIKE AN ARTIST

Many people would say here that "I'm not an artist" or "it's just something I'd like to try, I cant even draw a straight line." Well, in that case, you'd be in good company. Picasso, Matisse, and Van Gogh didn't draw many straight lines. People are taught they cant draw from an early age when their stick figure doesn't look like their classmates or like their teacher's standard figure. That does not mean that it is a bad drawing, and that certainly doesn't mean that they are not an artist.

I believe everyone is an artist. A good drawing, and good art for that matter, imparts something. If your artwork expresses some thought, something you are seeing, a vibrancy or spirit that you sense, then it is a huge success despite how standardly realistic it appears. The challenge is to engage your mind as you work, so that you can capture these fleeting bits of life. It's not a nebulous or opaque as it may sound. There are many techniques and simple exercises that can help you start thinking like an artist! I will happily share what I know.

WORKING LIKE AN ARTIST

Thinking like an artist is 80 percent of the game, the other .. what is it 20 percent is technique, which of course we explore with the workshops. It's like a crash course in art school.
  • Learning to draw what you see
  • Learning what makes a good drawing and incorporating those ideas into your work
  • Introduction and familiarization with new materials
  • Basics of color mixing for paint and mixed media
  • Understanding composition and how to create dynamic interesting composition in your work
  • Easy to learn painting techniques that will make you look like you know what you're doing, even if you don't.
  • Lots of fun collage techniques
